On Sunday January 23rd, Art-full members are invited to join us as we dive into the world of abstraction with a visit to the Labyrinth of Forms exhibit at the Whitney Museum with Art Historian, Hall W Rockefeller.
During the 1930s and 1940s, abstraction began to gain momentum as an exciting, fresh approach to modern artmaking in the United States, and a small contingent of American artists dedicated themselves to it. A significant number of American abstractionists were women, and their efforts propelled the formal, technical, and conceptual evolution of abstract art in this country. With over thirty works by twenty-seven artists drawn almost entirely from the Whitney’s collection, Labyrinth of Forms highlights both the achievements of these artists and the ways in which works on paper served as sites for important exploration and innovation. Luckily, we will also have Hall W Rockefeller, Founder of Less than Half, on hand to prep us for our viewing of the exhibit. Anyone who attended our ‘Alternative History of Art’ online event with Hall in March 2021 knows how chock-full of knowledge she is!
We will meet first for the brunch & art talk at noon, followed by 2pm reserved entry to the museum. Stick around for optional drinks & discussion at the Studio Bar on the 8th floor (not included in ticket price), or head to the Jasper Johns exhibit afterwards.
All tickets include the art talk & brunch at Fig & Olive. Full experience tickets also include 2pm reserved entry to the Whitney. Art talk/brunch only tickets are designed for those who are members of the Whitney and will reserve their own museum entry. Brunch includes 1 brunch entree, 1 non-alcoholic beverage, tax & tip.
Brunch & talk only: $45 through 1/9; $48 thereafter (for those with a Whitney membership)
Full experience with museum entry: $68 through 1/9; $72 thereafter

More about Hall W. Rockefeller:
Hall holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in the history of art and has given lectures at the National Arts Club (NY) and Black Mountain College (NC) and has been published in art publications such as Hyperallergic and Sculpture Magazine, among others. She founded Less than Half in response to the fact that, between 2008 and 2018 only 14% of solo museum shows in the U.S. featured a female artist, even though women make up 51% of the population.
More about Less Than Half:
Less Than Half is a website dedicated to the unsung heroines of the art world, the women who worked alone, the women who worked in the shadows of their husbands, and the women who were deemed ‘minor’ in movements of majors. "An art world that doesn’t acknowledge the works of female artists and artists of color is not only an inequitable one, but one that ultimately harms art’s higher purpose: to expand our understanding of the world through seeing."
