Join us on Wednesday, 25th June for a private guided tour & Art-full Member dinner in honor of Anonymous Was A Woman: 25 Years of Supporting Women Artists at the Grey Art Gallery!

This powerful exhibition celebrates the Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW) grant program, which has championed mid-career women artists living and working in the United States since 1996. Featuring works by 41 of the 251 awardees from the program’s first 25 years, the show offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the evolution of contemporary women’s art and the impact of this ground-breaking initiative.

AWAW was created in response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ decision to stop funding individual artists. Since then, the program has awarded unrestricted $25,000 grants to women over 40, helping to fill a critical gap in arts funding. Founded by photographer and philanthropist Susan Unterberg—who remained anonymous until 2018—the program takes its name from Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, honouring the struggles and resilience of women artists throughout history.

Curated by Nancy Princenthal and Vesela Sretenović, the exhibition showcases a rich mix of media, themes, and voices—highlighting works created close to the time each artist received their award. From installation and time-based media to explorations of identity, craft, and community, the exhibit offers a compelling look at 25 years of bold, diverse, and transformative artmaking.

After our private tour, Art-full members are invited for a very special dinner at Hauser & Wirth’s new gallery/restaurant, Manuela, where we’ll have walk-through of some of the art on view, in addition to a delicious meal.

Inclusions: All tickets include entrance to the museum as well as the private, guided tour. Full experience tickets also include 1 alcoholic beverage OR appetizer (plus tax/tip) at dinner (For Members only). Any additional food or drink needs to be paid by venmo or zelle directly to the event host.
